A Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA) fez um levantamento da venda anual de analgésicos opioides e constatou que, em 2021, foram comercializadas cerca de 14,5 milhões de embalagens no Brasil. Esses medicamentos, a exemplo de oxicodona, codeína e fentanil, são usados principalmente para controle de dor crônica grave, inclusive dor oncológica. No entanto, também produzem sensação de euforia e relaxamento e são altamente viciantes. O farmacêutico José Artur da Silva Emim, coordenador e docente do curso de Farmácia da Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul, em São Paulo, alerta que, quando ingeridos por um período prolongado, medicamentos opioides podem causar farmacodependência e levar a sérios riscos à saúde.
