Com as novas técnicas de cultura de identificação molecular de DNA bacteriano e os avanços nas múltiplas técnicas ômicas, caiu por terra o consenso científico de que, em condições de saúde, os pulmões seriam órgãos assépticos e livres de bactérias. A partir desse conhecimento, estudos passaram a comprovar que os pulmões são colonizados por diferentes comunidades microbianas que se instalam pouco após o nascimento, sofrem influência do meio e, assim como ocorre com a microbiota intestinal, podem interferir com a imunidade local. O grupo de pesquisa da professora doutora Denise Fonseca, coordenadora do Laboratório de Imunologia de Mucosas do Departamento de Imunologia do Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas da Universidade de São Paulo, investiga o tema e já tem alguns resultados bem interessantes.
